A Study of Relationships Between the Onset of Psychiatric lllnesses and Stressful Life Events



Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the onset of psychiatric illnesses and stressful life events using Lee Pyung-Sook's Social Readjustment Rating Scale in 274(122 male and 152 female) psychiatric outpatients
who
had
first visited at Dong-A University Hospital from October, 1991 to March, 1993,
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1, The amount of life change unit of patient group was significant higher than that of control group (P<0,001), And about 20% of patients were distributed on section above 1000LCU,
2. The amount of life change unit by age was tend to increase in rising generation below 40,
3. Among seventeen factors by factor analysis, nine factors, six factors in patient group and three factors in control group, had statistically significant difference between two group (P<0,05), Six factors in patient group were marital
problems,
children's problems, family member's marital life, family conflicts, religion and health change, And three factors in control group were friendship and success, examination and schooling and bereavement,
4. The amount of life change unit by psychiatric diagnosis was higher in major depression and dysthymia than control group (P<0,05),
The above results are expected to be helpful to understanding of the onset of psychiatric illnesses and its management,
